Incorporating a meditation practice in one's life has many benefits for the mind, body, and soul. While many people would like to meditate it is often hard to know where to start. Here are some meditation tips for beginners.
Create a Quite Space
Find a space free of distractions in which you can relax. This could be a bedroom, park, etc. If you choose to mediate in a room I recommend cleaning before you start your practice. It is also nice to dim the lights. You can also enhance the space by lighting candles or burning incense.
Get Comfortable
Either sit in a comfortable crossed legged position or lay down. For beginners it is often easier to start laying down as it is hard for most people to sit straight up for extended periods of time. If you choose to lay down it can be nice to use an eye pillow to calm the nervous system.
The Practice
Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. There are many different breathing techniques to try. An easy one to begin with is focusing on breathing into your belly. As you exhale let your thoughts leave your body.
Set Realistic Goals
When you start practicing don't make yourself practice to for long periods of time unless you love it! It's okay to practice for 2-3 minutes for a time in the beginning.
Don't Be Afraid to Seek Help
If you need more help mediating try taking a class or following along with a guided mediation. There are tons of free guided meditations on YouTube.
